New postcode system for Ireland launches
In December 2013, Capita was awarded the 10-year contract to design and implement a postcode system (branded Eircode) for Ireland.
Unlike other countries, where postcodes define clusters or groups of addresses, an Eircode identifies an individual address – rural or urban - and help show exactly where it is located.
35% of addresses in Ireland are shared (“non-unique”), which makes them difficult to identify accurately. From today, the addition of an Eircode to these addresses solves this challenge by giving each premises its own unique code. This is expected to resolve many existing problems in the delivery of goods and services.
All residents and businesses received a letter notifying them of the Eircode for their address. Addresses did not change, an Eircode was simply added to the end of the current address.
Minister for Communications Alex White TD launched Eircode at an event in Dublin. Business representatives and other stakeholders joined the Eircode team at the official launch, where a unique new online tool, the Eircode Finder, was also unveiled.
